Five Best iPhone Golf GPS Apps

There are many golf GPS apps for the iPhone, so we cut the field down to the top five worthy of your consideration. iPhone apps involve some compromises compared to dedicated hand-held golf GPS units, but deliver plenty of functionality. Keep in mind:
- These apps consume a lot of power. Start with a full charge, and use power-save modes when available.
- iPhones are not water-resistant. Use a protective case or plastic bag in case of rain.
- Don’t bother with apps that make you “mark your own” course. Check course database links.
- No free apps made the cut. You get what you pay for in this category.
Golfshot: Golf GPS for iPhone ($29.99)
There are two versions of Golfshot, and this is the Golfshot: Golf GPS version that includes aerial views (unlike the 99 cent version). Golfshot has the top-line features, but also sets itself apart with its best-in-class stats tracking and graphing. It automatically creates superb color graphics for fairways hit and missed (left or right), greens in regulation, sand saves, putts per hole, and more.
Additional features include:
- Zoomable aerial view with “TruePoint” touch targeting for distances.
- Shot distance tracking.
- Automatic course handicap calculator.
- E-mailable scorecards.
- Targets and hazards distances.
iTunes customer reviews: 4+ out of 5 for current version.
GolfLink Game Tracker iPhone Golf GPS ($14.99)
GolfLink is a popular and well-thought-out site for golfers, so I wasn’t surprised to find that the GolfLink Game Tracker iPhone golf GPS app is a solid performer. Highlights include:
- Intuitive, easy-to-use interface.
- Effective and accessible power-save control.
- Thorough stats-pack and graphing.
- Reasonable price and no hidden recurring fees.
- 18,000+ free course database (U.S. and Canada only, so far).
- Shot distance tracking.
- Integrated upload to GolfLink’s “My Game” features, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter.
iTunes customer reviews: 4+ out of 5 for current version.
GolfLogix for iPhone ($39.95 per year)
GolfLogix has steadily improved its golf GPS iPhone app to the point that it has broken into my top five picks. The latest version (updated March, 2010) has a sharp, bright, easy-to-use interface built from the ground up for the iPhone. Aerial views give a great look at each hole, and a summary screen provides distance to the center of the green, layup distance, and distances to hazards. The scorecard is easy to use, and has the look of a paper scorecard. You can easily measure shot distances with the GolfLogix app, and the stats utility captures and graphs a number of stats, including fairways hit, greens hit, and greens in regulation.
iTunes customer reviews: 4+ out of 5 for current version.
