Imperiali Geneve has just unveiled the Emperador – the world’s most exclusive humidor, a tour de force of custom craftsmanship that will run you a cool $1 million.

Thousands of hours went into assembling the Swiss-made precious gold and black lacquer cigar chest crowned by a complex tourbillon (a vortex especially of a whirlwind or whirlpool) timepiece made up of 323 moving parts. It comes complete with 24 Grand Cru cigars, each aged for 48 months and wrapped in real gold leaf, and a nine-digit code is needed to open it.

A display inside the chest indicates the relative humidity and temperature inside the chest, the power reserve on the tourbillon, which features a ‘Clous de Paris’ guilloche dial, and the number of cigars remaining. A cleverly concealed drawer contains a matching cigar cutter, 3-nozzle table lighter and an ashtray that automatically opens whenever a cigar is brought near.

The chest is programmed to maintain a constant humidity level of 70% and a temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius regardless of external environmental conditions. Only twelve numbered examples of the extravagant accessory will be made. Imperiali Geneve says its aim is to “reinvent existing objects by transcending the bounds of reason”. We’d say they’ve succeeded nicely.
