Samsung Unveils a Movie Theater-Sized LED Screen (Video)

This is the dell knell for movie theater projectors.

Samsung has just unveiled the first movie theater sized LED screen at the Lotte Cinema chain in Korea. The 33.8-foot Cinema Screen is smaller than the average 50-foot movie screen but would fit well in smaller theaters.

Samsung claims the peak brightness level nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard cinema projectors. Though it does not use a projector, this display is sure to please filmmakers and studios: It is “distortion-free” and offers a “nearly infinite contrast ratio,” which will allow for deep blacks and extremely bright colors.

Lotte Cinema plans to install more of Samsung’s Cinema LED Screens in major South Korean theaters. Samsung’s plans also include launching Cinema LED theaters in the U.S., China, Europe and Southeast Asia. Their goal is to install Cinema LED Screens in 10 percent of cinemas across the world at some point in the near future.
